There are some very important things that you should do to extend the life of your air conditioner and keep it working at peak efficiency at all times. One of the most important things that you can do is change your air filter every three to six months. Many factors determine how often air filters should be changed. Equipment efficiency declines. Replacing your air conditioner filter too often can be a waste of your hard earned money, especially if you are using an expensive type of filter. A possible solution to this is to use electrostatic filters which you clean and reuse. It is important to keep in mind that the more efficient your air conditioner filter is the more often it will have to be cleaned or replaced. For most people, pleated filters will do an adequate job. These filters are ten to sixty percent efficient and some manufacturers claim even higher efficiencies.

Pleated air conditioner filters should be changed every three to six months depending on how dusty it is where you live. If you live in an area with lots of dust then your filter may need to be changed every couple of months. If you require more efficient air filtration you may want an electrostatic, electronic or even a HEPA filter. The more efficient the filter is the more often it will have to be cleaned or replaced.Electrostatic filters offer the greatest value. They cost 2 to 6 times more than an efficient disposable filter but are reusable. You simply rinse them with water and they are ready to use again.Electronic filters will never become dirty enough to effect airflow. They just become inefficient and there ability to remove dust from the air deminishes. To clean these filters you have to remove the electronic cells and soak them in something like HVAC cleaner and then rinse them and let them dry.HEPA filters are the most efficient filters available but become plugged very quickly. They need to be checked monthly and often cause too much restriction to airflow to be used at all. An air conditioner contractor will be able to tell you if it is worth trying one of these in your system.Economy panel filters that you can get from your local hardware store are probably the worst type of filters that you could possibly use in your air conditioner. These are the ones that you could almost read a book through. These filters are at the bottom of the list, when it comes to efficiency. These filters do such a poor job you could leave one in your air conditioner for a year and it might not collect enough dust to require changing. The unfortunate thing is the evaporator coil of your air conditioner would need to be cleaned every year to remove the dirt that should have been stopped by the filter.

Do you know what types of allergen air you are breathing inside your home or office? You should not only ask yourself this question, but you need to find out the answer as well. Studies have shown the air inside the home or office is up to five times worse than the air outside. This is because the home or office is closed up. Windows and doors are closed and the air cannot get out, trapping the pollutants inside.

A lot of pollutants in the air cause health problems, and in some cases, even death. The pollutants you find inside your home or office are: pet dander, pollen, dust mites, airborne bacteria, house dust, and in some homes, second hand smoke. Inhaling these types of pollutants will cause symptoms such as: runny nose, red eyes, skin rashes, burning in the nose and throat, headaches, fatigue, sneezing; and can also trigger asthma symptoms. Do you suffer from asthma symptoms or any other symptoms mentioned above? If so, your home or office might be filled with allergen air.

Do you have a pet inside the home? Do you have someone who smokes living in your home? Smoke and pet dander are just two pollutants that trigger asthma. Asthma, if not kept under control, can be fatal. Good clean air will help in the control process of asthma symptoms.

Other pollutants in the air, which triggers asthma, are mold and dust mites. Mold is a living thing that produces spores. These spores are released into the air, landing in areas that are damp; and more mold will starts to grow. Air purifiers help to remove the mold spores that are released into the air.

Dust mites are found in the carpet you walk on. Just walking through your house can release dust mites into the air. Air purifiers help to remove the dust mites that are released into the air.

Can you imagine how much better you would feel living in a home or working in an office breathing good clean air? Air purifiers will help to control the amount of Pollutants found in your home or office. Whether you are inside your home, school, or work place, you will be comforted in knowing that an air purifier is on the job.

We at Air Purifier Professionals are committed to bringing our customer the best products for the best prices. We have Hepa, Ionic, and Electrostatic Air Purifiers.

Most people suffer from different types of allergies due to various allergens and one of them is mold allergies. One of the most problematic of allergies is due to molds as this is one allergy that can occur at any time as there is no fixed season for molds to appear. This makes it miserable for those suffering from mold allergies as they will never know when they are likely to get one. But the number of people who suffer from mold allergies is far less than the other allergies though more mold can be found in everyday life. Mold allergies tend to cause sneezing and watery eyes in people and these symptoms can be effectively treated with medication and even prevention.

Mold allergies have the same symptoms as that of other allergies. The common symptoms of mold allergies are nasal congestion, running nose, watery eyes, and rashes or hives on the skin. If you have been in the garden raking the leaves or mowing the grass and you suddenly find that you begin to sneeze continuously and start to itch all over the body then be sure that you are indeed suffering from mold allergies.

Sometimes you may even suffer from these symptoms when you enter a musty basement or any place that is moist. To confirm and verify that you are indeed suffering from mold allergies it is best that you see your doctor immediately and have an allergy test done. Normally there are two different types of tests that are carried out. One is the blood test and the other is a skin test. The results of either of the tests will help your doctor determine what exactly is causing your allergy and what medication he or she can give you.

The treatments for most allergies are the prescription of anti histamines and decongestants. If it is more severe then your doctor will prescribe a stronger dosage. To clear your congested nose you can use steroidal sprays or inhalers incase you suffer from asthma. All these medications have been found to be extremely safe and so for mold allergy sufferers, it is not harmful for them to take it all year long.

Though there are medications for such allergies a more effective way is to prevent it. The best way would be to avoid that which can cause the allergy which is the mold spores. Stay away from foods which can develop molds much easily like mushroom and cheese and also stay away from damp places like the basements if you want to avoid mold allergies. Mold can also form on furnace filters, so changing them regularly would prevent molds from forming. Prevention and treatment are ideal ways to tackle mold allergies.

Right now, there are probably numerous things around your home that are costing you money. Some of the more common money pit areas in the home are lights, appliances and faucets. By switching these items and others to more economical, energy efficient alternatives, you could easily save between $250 and $500 a year on your home bills.

Here’s a quick calculation to determine if you need more energy efficient measures to reduce your utility bills: Total up the amount of your fuel and electric bills for the past 12 months. Divide the total by the square footage of your home, excluding your garage and any unheated basements. The answer should be between 60 cents and 90 cents per square foot. If it’s higher, you need to take energy-efficient steps to lower your bills.

To get you started on the road to ample savings, here are 10 of the most costly home practices, which, if corrected, could significantly lop your home utility bills. But with a keen eye, you’re sure to find other areas around the home that can be turned into money saving measures. As an added bonus, you can also find a one-time income tax credit of up to $500 for installing energy efficient new windows, doors, insulation, roofs and heating and cooling equipment in your home.

1. LIGHTBULBS. Incandescent lightbulbs not only consume a lot of energy, they’re costly. If you have at least four, 100-watt incandescent bulbs that burn four or more hours a day in your home, the Alliance To Save Energy recommends replacing them with 23-watt fluorescent bulbs. Compact fluorescent bulbs use only a quarter of the energy of typical lightbulbs, last 10 times longer and lower utility bills. Replacing just four incandescent bulbs with fluorescent light bulbs will save about 454 kilowatt hours of electricity, a savings of $82 over three years.

2. APPLIANCES. Did you know that some appliances, even when turned off, use energy 24 hours a day? Your refrigerator, for instance, which is on 24 hours a day, accounts for about 15 percent of your total home electricity bill. In this technological age, most homes have more than one television and at least one VCR, DVD, CD player and computer. All of these items increase the power in a home, especially VCRs, cordless phones, microwaves, faxes and other items that may be switched off but tranquil require power around the clock. Statistics from the U.S. Department of Energy reveal that the average household spends close to $1,500 each year on home energy. Research has found that appliances and items that expend electricity continuously account for 5 percent of total domestic energy consumption. In fact, televisions and VCRs alone cost about $30 per household a year in utility costs. One way to dramatically reduce this type of cost is by purchasing appliances displaying an Energy Star effect, a symbol that the item has been designated energy efficient. Energy efficient items can reduce wasted energy by at least 75 percent.

There are other ways you can save money with appliances. For example, in the kitchen, you can save money by using a microwave, convection oven, or toaster oven to cook small portions or dinners, reserving the conventional oven or stove-top for larger items, like a turkey, or family dinners only. Another cost-saving tip: When boiling a pot of water, cover it with a lid to reduce cooking time and be sure to match the pot size to the burner to prevent energy waste.

3. WINDOWS. You could actually be throwing heating and cooling dollars out the window if your windows and doors aren’t properly insulated. Assume that the average home has enough leaks around its windows and doors to equal one originate 3′ by 3′ window. Here’s a speedy check to do: Run your hand around each window frame and door in your home. If you feel a draft, these areas should be better insulated to get the maximum savings from your heating and cooling systems. To better seal your window, use caulking between the window frame and wall. For the door, use weather stripping between the door and its frame. If you need to replace your windows or glass doors, purchase ones with an Energy Star label. Although you’ll be spending a bulk of money up front to replace old windows, your investment will bring you substantial savings over the years. For example, today’s windows are typically three to four times more energy efficient than windows made 10 years ago. If you’re unable to afford to replace your windows, take temporary measures, such as inexpensive plastic film kits.

4. THE THERMOSTAT. The largest part of your heating and cooling budget is controlled by your home’s thermostat. The most costly practice by homeowners is forgetting to lower the thermostat when no one is home. Set on your home’s heating and cooling costs by keeping the thermostat at a constant temperature, such as 68 degrees, when you’re home, and lowering it to 60 or 65 degrees when you leave. The Alliance To Save Energy reports that for each degree you lower your thermostat in winter, you can save about 3 percent on your heating bill. Remember to clean or replace furnace and air conditioner filters once a month during their usage seasons to further cut costs.

5. WATER. Just think of the numerous ways you use water around the house: laundry, making coffee, doing dishes, showering, and gardening, just to name a few. About 14 percent of your home heating budget goes to making hot water. Here are some ways to cut down on your hot water usage around the home:
* Dwelling the hot water heater thermostat to low or 120 degrees. It will meet all your hot water needs while lowering the energy needed to maintain water hot in the tank.
* If the outside of your hot water heater is warm when you touch it, wrap it in an insulated covering.
* Switch to a low-flow showerhead. It’s a worthwhile investment, considering you can reduce your shower water use in half.
* When using the dishwasher, turn if off before it reaches the drying cycle, or if you have the option, select frosty dry instead of hot dry.
* When washing clothes, expend warm or cold water whenever possible and rinse in cold water.

6. LANDSCAPING. Many homeowners don’t realize that there are more benefits to a lawn than it’s attractive look. Planting certain trees and shrubs in specific places in your yard could sever both your summer and winter energy bills. For instance, evergreen trees on the north side and leafy trees on the south side can block winter winds and summer sun. Often times, outdoor lighting is incorporated into the landscaping. As with indoor lights, you can save money by replacing bright lights with compact fluorescent lighting. If your outdoor lighting is left on more than a couple of hours a night, use a timer or motion sensor to save on your utility bill.

7. AUTO. If you think your car is a gas cow, there are steps you can take to reduce your fuel bills. First, have your car tuned regularly and be certain your tires are properly inflated. When driving, keep in mind that for each mile you depart below 65 mph saves about two percent of gas. Efficiently running cars help reduce America’s carbon monoxide emissions by 14 million tons and saves 1.47 billion gallons of gasoline each year.

8. OUTDOOR MAINTENANCE. A common, yet costly practice of most homeowners is overlooking their home’s roof. Unfortunately, the oversight could lead to expensive repairs caused by water leaks or other structural damage. One form of prevention is conducting quarterly roof washings. Hosing down your roof will remove twigs, leaves and other debris from between shingles and gutters. It’s this type of debris that could effect the performance of your home’s shingles and cause damage to your roof during a storm. At the same time, trim any tree limbs that may be hanging near or brushing against the roof. Not only will this prevent afflict during a storm, it will also improve your home’s energy efficiency by allowing the sun to shine through. If you have other outdoor structures, such as a garage, shed, or canopy, be sure to wash their roofs as well.

9. INSULATE. According to home maintenance professionals, more money goes out of your home when not properly insulated. In addition to your home’s windows and doors, there are other outdoor areas that need proper insulation. For instance, the areas where electrical, telephone and cable wires enter your home should be caulked. Not to be overlooked are openings for dryer and gas vents. In older homes, the foundation of your home may need reinforcements in its insulating. Your local hardware store can offer assistance with the best material options for insulating a foundation. Before insulating, caulk the inside rim frame and continue down the foundation wall to below the frostline.

10. HOME BUYING. If you’re in the market for a new home, you should look for one that can nick your operating costs. The best way to carry out this is by selecting a home with high energy-efficient standards. These include high-performance windows, advanced insulation and sealing, high-efficiency appliances and energy-efficient heating/cooling systems. Keep an eye out for homes with an Energy Star label that are certified to use at least 30 percent less energy than required by the national Model Energy Code. Another way to choose a home’s energy efficiency is to obtain a home energy rating. Financing for the cost of the upgrades may qualify for an energy-efficient mortgage.

HOME SAVINGS CHECKLIST
If you acknowledge ‘No’ to any of these questions, there are costly practices taking place at your home. Take action as soon as possible to start saving!

Do you replace or acquire new products that are labeled energy efficient?
Do you have double-pane windows throughout your entire home?
If you have single-pane windows, do you have storm windows or plastic film kits on them?
Does your home have a programmable thermostat?
Is your home equipped with a high-efficiency furnace, air conditioner or heat pump?
Do you light your home with compact and other fluorescent light bulbs?
Is your refrigerator certified energy-efficient?
Is there a low-flow showerhead installed in all showers in your home?
Does you dishwasher have an energy-efficiency setting?
Are your home office equipment and electronics certified energy-efficient?
Is your home’s attic, exterior walls and crawl spaces insulated?
Is the area between window/door frames and walls properly caulked?
Are all your home’s windows and doors properly weather-stripped?
Is the outside of your hot water heater insulated?
Do you regularly well-organized your home’s furnace and air conditioner filters?
Do you turn off lights when you leave a room?
Is your hot water heater set no higher than 120 degrees F.?

While you would give anything for a squeaky clean house, you do not really want to do all that housework. But you would want its occupants to feel safe from viruses and disease vectors. You would want to make it look more livable at least. You would want to feel at home.

If you just know how to maximize what little you have left in your schedule, and use the right housekeeping products, you can clean your house in no time.

If you really don’t have time for cleaning house, you may want to hire a housecleaner every now and then. You could easily build on what he or she started and just maintain your house’s cleanliness thereafter. However, a one-time general cleaner may be more expensive than a regular housekeeper.

You could always go solo, all for the price of vapor. Just follow these shortcuts to a clean home.

1. Clean as you go

It is best not to wait until all the dirt and clutter have pent up before you get down to work. Clean little but often. Otherwise, you’d be overwhelmed with the amount of accumulated mess you have to tackle. For one, water spots are harder to remove if you leave them to dry. Cleaning toothpaste on the counter is also difficult if you leave it for later.

2. Allow time for some cleaning products to kick in

If you want one-stop housecleaning, give some products time to work their magic. Pour cleaner into the toilet bowl at night before you sleep; you would find it easier to clean in the morning. The same goes for ovens with stains and burnt greases. Allow the cleaner to permeate the mess before wiping it away. Better yet, buy cheap oven liners (available in all sizes) to catch those pesky spills.

3. Keep dirt and dust outdoors

Put two mats on your doorway, one outside, the other inside. Outdoor dirt accounts for nearly all the dirt on your floors and carpets. As a preventive measure, you may ask occupants and guests not to enter the threshold with their shoes on. But be hospitable all the same; let guests choose from an array of flip-flops.

4. Replace air filter regularly

Every three months, change the furnace’s air filter. Clean or new filters trap more dust and grime from the air and do not deteriorate too soon. What’s more, clean filters consume less power.

5. Cut back on clutter

Many things in your house, like old newspapers and obsolete desktop monitors, serve no other purpose than catching dust. Ditch them to free space and make housekeeping more bearable. If your clutter is comprised of uncompleted projects, e.g. important papers and unreturned purchases, set aside time every week to follow them up. Meanwhile, store away clutter of sentimental value inside boxes and special containers. That is, if they really are worth keeping.

6. Use hangers

Put clothes hangers or hampers in the bathroom and all the bedrooms. With these around, even the busiest busybody in the house would not throw their clothes on the floor.

7. Invest in good cleaning tools

If your cleaning tools weren’t so irksome, you may just find cleaning fun. Look around the market, which bursts at the seams with affordable, innovative cleaning products. Try them out even after you find something very practical. Also, don’t forget to buy basic cleaning tools as well as the multipurpose ones.

8. Store cleaning tools properly

You’ll find cleaning a breeze if you know where to look for your tools and products beforehand. Store them in various places around the house, near the places where they are usually used. Consider storing them in containers with handles so you can carry them wherever in the house. After you’re done cleaning, return them to their appointed places.

9. Make the vacuum cleaner work for you

Many people do not like using the vacuum due to its weight, among other reasons. If you are one of these people, never fret because the latest models are lighter and more sophisticated than ever. Many vacuum cleaners today are easier on your back, such as the lightweight canister units. If you plan to buy a new vacuum cleaner, check out units marked with “HEPA”. This means they have High Efficiency Particulate Air filters, which catch finer particles than their conventional counterparts.

10. Make the most out of the dishwasher

One of the more efficient ways to clean kitchens is using the dishwasher. Not only can it clean pans, it can also tackle parts of the refrigerator, from ice trays to shelves.

You can turn your home into a more comfortable place to live and lower your energy bills by performing maintenance on your appliances, air-conditioning system, faucets and windows.

Here are 20 things to do that can make a big difference.

1. Turn twice-a-year maintenance on your air-conditioning and heating system into a habit. A qualified air-conditioner technician (or plumber, if it’s a gas furnace) will inspect cabinets, motors, fan blades, the control box, wiring, the blower assembly and other parts, and alert you to any problems in the making.

2. Don’t run your AC and evaporative cooler at the same time. You’ll waste energy because the two systems will compete with each other. The evap cooler adds moisture, and the AC removes it.

3. Turn off the evap cooler when it’s moist outside. Once the dew point reaches 50 degrees or more, an evaporative cooler is not very effective. Tip: Remember the Rule of 140. If the temperature plus the dew point equals 140 or more, then don’t expect much out of your evap.

4. Turn on the ceiling fans in the room you’re occupying. They don’t cool the air; but move it against your skin so it feels cooler. You can inch up the thermostat a few degrees and not notice a difference.

5. As incandescent bulbs burn out, replace them with energy-efficient compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs. They use 75 percent less energy.

6. Set the thermostat up to 10 degrees higher if you are going to be away for more than six hours. You’ll save about 10 percent a year on your cooling bills.

7. If you turn up the thermostat by just one degree during warm weather, you can save up to 3 percent on your summer energy bill.

8. Set your water heater at 120 degrees and wrap an insulation blanket around it. Besides saving energy, you’ll protect your family from getting scalded.

9. Turn to your electric utility for help. Make sure you are on a plan that is best for your family’s needs. A time-of-use plan, for example, can save you money if you focus on using less energy during the day.

10. Turn the guesswork over to a computer. You can keep your house as cool as you like and save at least 30 percent on your electric bill if you can figure out how to tap your electric utility’s “off-peak” rates at dozens of times of the day. An energy-management computer can do that for you. You’ll find them at Advanced Home Systems in Phoenix.

11. Keep your sunscreens in good repair on windows that face east or west. And if you remove them during the winter, be sure to reinstall them in the spring. Tip: Turn the rubber spline so it faces the street and not the house.

12. Turn your attic into your home’s first defense against the heat. If your home is drafty or too hot, you may need to replace or repair the insulation.

13. Recaulk your windows, if necessary. Check for air leaks with a barbecue lighter that has a “smoke” function. Eject some smoke near a window, door and electrical outlet. If the smoke wafts outdoors, so does the air-conditioned air. Once you find the leaks, seal them with caulk.

14. Turn your home over to an energy auditor for an afternoon. Hire a professional to study your home’s “envelope”- the walls, ceiling and floors – using pressure gauges, blowers and infrared cameras. An auditor can recommend repairs and fix problems as part of the service.

15. Vacuum the refrigerator’s condenser coils every few months, and repair gaskets coming loose from doors.

16. Fix a leaky faucet because a chronic drip wastes more water than you’d think. Use hot water less often. Try washing clothes in cold water using cold-water detergent.

17. If the air inside your house is dusty, it might mean your air-conditioning ducts have sprung leaks. Have them sealed, saving energy.

18. Get rid of that fridge in your garage, which works overtime to keep food cold.

19. As your old tree and house lights burn out, replace them with light-emitting diode (LED) lights, which burn at least 85 percent more efficiently than your old bulbs.

20. Assign a family member the job of replacing your air-conditioner’s filter every month; make someone else responsible for clearing debris from the outdoor unit of your air-conditioner.

House dust mites produce allergens that known to be among the most common triggers of asthma. According to the American College of Asthma, Allergy & Immunology, approximately 10 percent of Americans exhibit allergic sensitivity to dust mites. The Fall and Winter months are a particular problem, as we closed our houses and the concentrations of dust mites and their feces increases inside.

Some of the signs of house dust mite allergies are:

Sneezing

Itchiness

Inflamed eczema

Runny nose

Nasal congestion

Watering or reddening eyes

Clogging in the lungs

Asthma, difficulty in breathing

Facial pressure and pain

Frequent awakening

Swollen, blue-colored skin under your eyes

Dust mites feed on flakes of shed human and pet skin and they most likely to be found in bedrooms and kitchens. An average adult sheds up to 1.5 grams of skin each day, which is enough to feed a million of dust mites. A typical used mattress may have anywhere from 100,000 to 10 million mites inside.

The house dust mite favorite “playgrounds” are:

•Carpets

•Mattresses

•Bedding (especially in feather pillows)

•Upholstered furniture

•Clothing

House dust mites are to small to be visible to the naked eye (250-300 microns in length and have translucent bodies). The presence of house dust mites can be confirmed microscopically which requires collecting samples from mattresses, couches or carpets. It takes at least a 10X magnification to be able to correctly identify them. The adult mite’s cuticle (covering) has simple striations that can be seen from both the dorsal (top) view and from the ventral (bottom) view.

Dust mites prefer places with the 70 degrees Fahrenheit or above and the humidity approximately 75% to 80%. Also poor ventilation and indoor air pollution such as car fumes or tobacco smoke make the symptoms of dust mite allergy worse.

However there are some companies offering a service, using steam or ultraviolet light, to kill dust mites in mattresses and remove them. But there is no scientific evidence that the dust mite won’t appear again.

How to prevent dust allergy?

1.Use breathable organic bedding

2.Use barrier mattress covers and pillow zipped covers

3.Use non-feather pillows

4.Wash all bedding in very hot water once a week

Freezing and sunlight kills mites but does not remove their residue. In addition to freezing temperatures and washing items in temperatures greater than 130 degrees F, extended exposure to sunlight, and low levels of humidity also destroy the mites.

Use following tips to minimize dust level in other places:

Vacuum all carpets and upholstered furniture at least once a week

Wash small rugs and curtains in hot water

Clean floors and furniture with damp mop or cloth often

Use an air conditioning to lower humidity

Keep the humidity in your home below 55%

Wash soft toys and stuffed animals in hot water often

Replace wall-to-wall carpeting with wood or vinyl flooring

Clean or replace the air filters on your furnace or air conditioner at least once a month. Filters that are rated to trap allergens are obviously more effective than plain spun glass.

There are many reasons people buy new homes.

Being able to customize the plan and features to fit their family’s lifestyle is one of the most common. The satisfaction of being the first occupant and being able to devote time and money to decorate rather than repair or upgrade are other major reasons.

Less maintenance means more time for family and leisure, which is something we can all use. It’s great to know you won’t have to invest thousands of dollars in unexpected expenses.

Taking ownership of your new home is an important step towards a beautiful home for years to come. A new home is likely to be your biggest investment; you want to protect it and see its value increase while enjoying the lifestyle it provides. However, just as a new car requires oil, gas, washes and other incidentals, a new home needs a few things to keep it in good working order.

Here’s a simple list to get you into the routine of proper maintenance for your home. Tying it to holidays makes it easier to remember, though I find it usually happens after the holiday.

Victoria Day

* Garage floors, porches and masonry should be hosed off to get rid of dirt and salt. Salt causes serious damage to concrete and masonry. Try to use synthetic products to prevent ice on walkways.

* Clean windows and hose off vertical siding and eaves.

* Check wood windows, doors and exterior trim for peeling and repaint if necessary. If you have vinyl- or aluminum clad windows, you win out here.

Labour Day

* Check caulking around windows and doors including garage doors; touch up as needed.

* Change furnace filter (which should be done monthly) or clean furnace. Make sure that water lines from the furnace, air conditioner and humidifier aren’t clogged and drain properly.

* Check for loose or missing shingles.

* Check eavestroughs and downspouts during heavy rain to ensure that there are no blockages or leaks and that water runs away from foundations.

Thanksgiving

* Clogged dryer vents are a major cause of home fires. The dryer lint trap should be emptied after each load, and discharge hoses checked for blockage.

* Washing machine hoses are under intense pressure and can burst when they get old. Check annually, but change every five years to be safe.

* Exterior hose bibs must be closed prior to freezing weather. Inside valves should be closed and the exterior valves opened to drain water from the line.

* Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors should be vacuumed and the battery changed.

* Fireplace chimney should be checked for bird’s nests or other obstructions and dampers should be tested.

* A gas fireplace has a pilot light that can blow out over the summer, so the fireplace should be tested. If the fireplace doesn’t work, most new units have a starter button. Also, fixed glass panels can be removed and cleaned.

Christmas

* Direct vent gas furnaces and fireplaces are great, but over the winter you should check frequently to ensure side vents are free of snow and ice.

* Homes in London are prone to ice damming around roof valleys and edges due to frequent freezes and thaws. Ice dams can lift shingles and cause leaks, so make sure that build-ups are cleared.

* New homes are well-insulated and ventilated, but this also means that you need to manage the humidity. Check the humidity setting on your furnace or buy a small humidistat at a local building or hardware store. Mine sits on my kitchen counter, so it’s easy to check often. Too little humidity can cause hardwood floors to dry and separate; too much humidity can cause dripping windows, which can be unhealthy. Opening blinds, using the range hood to clear cooking steam and always running bathroom exhaust fans will help you keep a balance.

Taking a little care at regular points throughout the year will ensure your home operates at top performance.

If you wish to stretch the life span of your air conditioner and ensure that it works at its best, there are several things that you need to do. The first and the most important thing for you to do is change the filter of your air conditioner or furnace once in every three to six months.

The interval of filter changes would depend on several points, like the type of your home. Do not defer the change of filters for too long, as it would only depreciate the effectiveness of your machine, and would pull up the operating expenses. Again, too frequent filter changes would be a sheer wastage of money!

Remember, that if your air conditioner has an efficient filter, you would need to clean and change it all the more. Most of the people find pleated filters sufficient for them. These have an efficiency of ten to sixty percent, though some companies say that their filters are even more efficient.

The pleated filters have to be replaced once in every three to six months. You should make the replacement within three months if your locality has a high level of dust.If you want a filter that has the maximum efficiency, go for an electrostatic, electronic or HEPA filter. These filters are more effective, and so you would have to change them more frequently.

The electrostatic filters possibly have the best blend of efficiency and value. You would initially have to pay almost two to six times more than a regular throwaway filter, but ultimately it would be more cost effective as these filters can be cleaned and recycled just by washing.

Even if the electronic filters are dirty, they do not hamper the flow of air. When they are dirty, they lose their capacity of draining dust out of the air and simply stop working properly. You would then have to clean and dry the electronic cells by soaking them in HVAC cleaner solutions.

If you are searching for the most efficient filters, HEPA filters are what you want. But the problem is that these filters become choked up very fast, can hamper the airflow and can even become unusable if too much clogged. Hence you would have to check them each month. You can ask your conditioner contractor whether your machine needs this type of filter.

For most homeowners air quality control means changing the air filter on the A/C unit, this is of course an important task, but there are other issues that can not only harm you and your family, but some can potentially kill.

Known as the silent killer carbon monoxide poisoning can be present in the home and you would never know it. Carbon monoxide is the byproduct of fossil fuels being burned. The largest contributor to carbon monoxide being dispersed within the home is wood burning fireplaces. A chimney can become blocked by something as simple as a birds nest. Your gas-fueled furnace and water heater also emit certain levels of carbon monoxide. The easiest way to protect you and your family is to install several carbon monoxide detectors within your home. Place them in all of the bedrooms. Install the detectors as close the floor as possible, and keep them away from drafty areas that may cause a false safe reading.

Another area of concern is your air handler. This unit moves air within your home. In most homes they are located in a closet. Be sure to keep this area clean and clear of harmful chemicals. Never use this area as a storage space for harmful cleaning chemicals or paints. If any chemicals were to leak in the same space as your air handler the noxious fumes would be dispersed within your home causing a major health risk to you and your family. Try to always store harmful chemical is proper containers and as far away from living spaces as possible.

Adding an exhaust vent to your volatile chemical storage area will also prevent fumes from building to dangerous levels. Installation of an exhaust vent is an easy D.I.Y. project. If you are not comfortable working with electrical wiring, they make solar exhaust fans that require no wiring at all. Make sure to select an exterior wall of your home to install your new exhaust vent in. Never vent one room to another within your home, even if the other room is never used.
